  • Carpet and Grey Gaff Tape Color

What are the RGB values of the Official Arena carpet (S&S Mills, Sequoia 20 Oz. Level Loop Pile, Color: Ground Pepper)? I do not see Ground Pepper listed as a color on the S&S Mills website.

What are the RGB values of the Pro Gaff Grey tape used for the TRACKING LINES?

We are working on line following and want to ensure we get the contrasting grey colors correct to ensure proper operation.

From the game manual the carpet is approx RGB (129,133,134) and the TRACKING LINES are approx RGB (83,85,84). However the Pro Gaff website shows their grey as approx RGB (163,167,176).

    Thanks!

Re: Carpet and Grey Gaff Tape Color

The line tracking sensors use infrared light to detect objects, not visible light. as such, the contrasting colors of the carpet and tape aren't important, but the contrast in reflectivity.

The important thing when developing and testing line tracking code is finding a tape that the sensors will detect against the floor where the testing is being done. One solution we have found at FIRST is using clear or brown packing tape; the reflective glossy finish stands out against carpet, making it easier for the sensors to detect. The line tracking code still works with this different tape because the sensors are digital, meaning the presence or absence of the tape is what is checked by the code (not a specific intensity value).

The practice field at competitions will have the correct carpet and tape, allowing teams to test their code and calibrate the sensors. Using the potentiometer found on each unit, teams can tune the sensors so they will trip when they see the competition tape against the carpet.

In the Chief Delphi Forum there some discussion about having to mount the sensors at an angle to the carpet (rather than normal) in order to get a clear discrimination of the edge.

Can we safely assume that the carpet/tape combination provided at the FRC competition can give us reliable discrimination with our KOP sensors mounted normal to the carpet?

In the past, not all regionals have set up the practice field that FIRST provides. Because of the need to calibrate the line following sensors, will FIRST be mandating the practice field be set up, or providing an alternate (eg the real field)?

If there is no practice field set up at an event, an alternative will be available to teams, such as a section of carpet with competition tape on it, or allowing teams to calibrate their sensors on the competition field during or following the practice rounds.

As Field Supervisor in Seattle I have been told that we may allow Calibration during lunch time on Thurs Practice day. We also will set up a small section of practice field with one play station, etc as outlined above.
