  • Robo voting

    Obviously, there is a huge amount of automated voting going on during the GIA competition. Do you think the teams involved are aware or are they in denial? What could FIRST do to keep the idea of promotion of ideas, but not lead to such discouragement? I know it's been hard for my team to say vote for us, when it is such a huge impossibility to even think of making it into the top ten?

    I completely agree with you. I think FIRST should filter out the votes by IPs, instead of encouraging the kids to vote obsessively. My team is also very discouraged and lost drive to campaign for votes knowing that they don't stand a chance against the robots that put in 30k+ votes overnight. On top of that, our senior supporters find the voting process challenging even to vote once. I understand voting is only a small part of GIA, but I hope FIRST will disqualify those who robot vote to make it fair.

      I guess I am SO NON-TECHNICAL because I don't understand how these teams are "robot" voting but it is VERY discouraging to see all those points that just keep adding up. If FIRST was going to do something, it should have already acted.....and I am in agreement with you how it's difficult for some people to vote, especially when the site is SO SLOW, they press enter again and then once the vote finally does go through, it's invalid because it's detected as a double vote! We'll keep moving ahead at a snails pace and be happy to see our points slowly increase knowing that the word is spreading and our friends and families are supporting our efforts!

        I say if a team can get a NXT robot to vote for them, it should count.

          I saw a video of a NXT robot bowling a perfect game in Wii Sports. It shouldn't be too dificult to break down online voting into a timed sequence of button presses.

              If a team can get one to write the combined works of Shakespeare, then an infinite number of monkeys will be available for other tasks (such as re-writing the tax code).

                I'm having a hard time seeing a way to bypass the simple CAPTCHA test needed to vote when using an NXT. The NXT could certainly push the keys, but another program would need to parse the web pages and tell the NXT what keys to press.

                Now, if I can use the new EV3 model, with all the programming tools available for a Linux stack, and easy network access, it wouldn't be very difficult. I guess that means that next year FLL teams will actually be able to use their robots for robo-voting...

                  For those folks who are trying to figure out how to program NXT to do the voting should also consider programming AI into NXT so that it will determine whether the invention is worth voting for. Isn't that the whole point on GIA voting?

                    No, allowing multiple votes per person simply means it's an officially-sanctioned popularity contest that has nothing to do with what the best innovations are.

                      @J2M2
                      My comments on how to program an NXT to vote were not intended to be taken seriously. My apologies if they upset you.
                      However, I think Tom has the correct observation. Voting is intended as a way for friend, families, and interested parties to connect with teams, and to show their support. It is not really intended to pick the best idea for the GIA. There are over 350 teams entered this year. Has anyone who has voted really looked at all 350+ ideas to pick the "best" idea?

                      The following is a email sent to FLL coaches a few days ago from FLL Headquarters:

                      Subject: Get out the Vote for the Global Innovation Award
                      From: FIRST LEGO League HQ- Manchester, NH <[email protected]>
                      Coaches:
                      -->Make Your Vote Count…
                      352 teams have entered the Global Innovation competition, and nearly 2.5 million votes have been cast so far!

                      Have you voted for your favorite? There is still time to enter and vote – up until 12 noon EST on March 1. Here’s how one team’s coach views Global Innovation: “Thank you for continuing the "Coopertition" through the FLL(R) Global Innovation competition. We have been able to find and vote for, and hopefully connect with, many other teams whose ideas we respect, or teams we wish to support. It is a wonderful way to share.”

                      We want to remind teams who have gotten the word out to vote on their Global Innovation Award submissions to tell their supporters about FLL Core Values, and Gracious Professionalism(TM). It’s important to vote fairly, and respect other teams in the competition. No computer-generated voting is allowed. Remember, online voting is only one way to make it to the semi-finals and does not determine the winning team or runners-up. Expert judges select their top choices from all entries.

                      More information can be found in the FAQs under “How do you vote for a submission?”, http://fllinnovation.firstlegoleague.org/.

                        Re: Robo voting

                        When the ideas first started going up, it was fun to browse around - mainly because I was looking to see if there was an idea similar to my team's. Maybe, instead of voting, FIRST could do more of a forum idea- so people could respond with comments, instead of votes.

                        I just don't like how this year's voting is going - so many teams got so discouraged after the first few days - what should have been an exciting and fun time was ruined.

                          Re: Robo voting

                          I'm on my lunch break, so thought I would go online and vote for my team's innovative solution. It took minutes for the site to load (SLOW) and then when I finally was able to submit my vote, I got a message that the site is too busy, come back later. Wonder if this has something to do with the top team listed in the number 1 thru 6 spot! So sad.

                            The reason why the top team is listed multiple teams is that the system can't even keep up with the voting. Many of the top teams show up multiple teams at any one time because of this. I don't remember it being this bad last year.
