  • 2020 Virtual Events Setup

    Hey everyone!

i am currently trying to figure out how to setup the game board virtually this season.

thoughts so far is an above view camera that is moved around before and after the game. otherwise i believe we would need multiple cameras to check the game board after each match.

Hopefully FIRST will provide some guidance to teams for how to record their game runs, otherwise it's going to be very difficult to assess the match results.

Thanks! That seems like pretty useful guidance.

Where were you able to find this? It doesn't feel like it was made by FIRST, no one even ran a grammar check on it.

Our local Minnesota partner (High Tech Kids) has released a document describing how remote events will be held.

                Thanks for posting this.
So, you're going to do the matches using live video, instead of by reviewing videotaped matches?
Have you had any events yet? How is it going?

Yes, that is the plan. Due to increased COVID-related restrictions in Minnesota, all of our FLL tournaments have been delayed until February 2021.
Some of the teams did participate in early "virtual practice rounds" online with referees before the most recent restrictions, and my understanding is that the sessions went pretty well.
The robot practice rounds will resume next month. I'm a judge, not a referee, so I'll have to wait until February to see how the virtual tournaments work.

                    Thanks for the update.

My concern is not with the judging sessions, FIRST is providing the remote event Hub to coordinate that.

But the from the training I've seen, the remote hub seems to have no features at all for supporting the robot game. I'm trying to see if anyone has solved the problems of how to replicate the in-person robot game experience, but remotely. Things like coordinating practice rounds, providing feedback to teams, having referees collaborate with the team on scoring, etc. I'd rather not invent something if someone else already has.

I'd prefer to do it with the recorded robot game videos, rather than doing everything via live video sessions. The workflow is easier to manage if you don't have to get multiple parties on individual video sessions.

All good questions Tom. I would suggest you drop a line to the people at High Tech Kids and pick their brains. https://hightechkids.org/about-us/contact-us/
They have been running the FLL in our region for years, and will certainly give you their thoughts on tournaments in this crazy season.

Update: I have received no reply from High Tech Kids to my request.
